ASSISTANT VICTIM ADVOCATE

Job Description
The City of Saratoga Springs currently has an opening for an Assistant Victim Advocate. This is a part-time position with the Saratoga Springs Police Department working approximately twenty hours per week. This position is under the supervision of the Victim Advocate. This position entails a variety of duties related to assisting victims of crime. These duties involve assisting victims with information regarding the criminal justice process, financial and legal assistance, and emergency sheltering. The Assistant Victim Advocate will also be required to assist the Victim Services Coordinator in recruiting, training and managing the volunteer victim advocate team.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Must be willing to be on call occasionally to assist crime victims at the scene.
Coordination of volunteer services including, but not limited to, scheduling and planning of monthly advocate training meetings, maintaining files, and completing background checks.
Assist with the preparation of volunteer manuals, victim services orientations, ongoing victim advocacy education; volunteer schedules, keeping statistical records and recording of volunteer advocate hours.
Work directly with the victims of domestic violence by educating them about victim rights, victim services, the legal process, which includes court proceedings and protective orders, and help provide crisis intervention.
Assist with reporting child abuse and/or neglect whenever appropriate or mandated.
Update files to keep accurate records of all meetings and contacts with victims and any other interfacing that may occur between the victim and the advocate.
Maintain composure when confronted with hostile, emotional people.
Tactfully answer routine questions from victims, the public, and City staff.
Assists with the completion of grant applications and financial reports related to victim services grants.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
JOB QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES:
Education &
Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
No previous experience is required for this position, however preference will be given to applicants with at least 6 months of experience in victims advocate services, public safety services, or a related field.
Certifications Required:
A valid Utah State Driver License.
Knowledge of:
Appropriate state and local laws relating to domestic violence and crime victims.
Legal terminology, court practices and procedures.
General professional office practices and procedures.
Effective verbal and written communications skills.
Good to excellent writing skills are also required for this position.
Correct use of English language and vocabulary.
Ability to:
Interact with the public in all situations while maintaining a professional, pleasant, and courteous demeanor.
Handle confidential information in a sensitive manner.
Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
Track and monitor Grant funds.
Very effective organizational skills .
Ability to use Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer and Power Point.
Utilize efficiently office equipment including, but not limited to, a photo copier, telephone, facsimile, adding machine, shredder, multi-line telephone system, computer and other standard office equipment.
Maintain effective working relationships with Police Officers, City staff, members of the public, and others encountered in the course of work.
Communicate well in a courteous and professional manner by telephone, in writing, and in person.
Understand, analyze, and recommend actions to the Victims Advocate and Police Department.
Proof read documents.
Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Manage heavy workloads, prioritize, and multitask.
Maintain general order and cleanliness of work area and city vehicle.

SALARY RANGE:
Full wage ranges are as follows, please note hiring will normally occur at the minimum of the range and will not exceed the midpoint. Also, please note that this is a VOCA Grant Funded position and future wage ranges and increases are subject to grant funding: Minimum - $12.82/hr., Midpoint - $15.70/hr., Maximum - $18.58/hr.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
